    spoonful of sugar

    2006 - 02.27

he might not be the frontman of fall out boy, but bassist and lyricist pete wentz is definitely the brains of the indie outfit. his musical talents, combined with his undeniable good looks, help him clinch the title of this week’s hot rocker.

i realized today that i’ve only been choosing brunette boys when featuring my favorite rock stars. upon further consideration, i found it hard to think of any notable blondes or red-heads. why is that?

    flashback: men on films

    2006 - 02.26

i happened upon this clip today and i couldn’t resist sharing it. it’s an oldie but a goodie – a “men on films” skit from fox’s ’90s sketch comedy show “in living color” (where jim carrey, jennifer lopez and jamie foxx got their start).

the gays at glaad considered this over-the-top portrayal of homosexuals to be discriminatory when it originally aired, but i think they were just being touchy. yes, blaine edwards and antoine merriweather are stereotypical queens, but they’re also very clever and hysterically funny.

he could just eat them up

    2006 - 02.24

apparently german cannibal armin meiwes has a taste for popstars. meiwes, who is currently on trial for killing and eating a man he met on the internet, included robbie williams and liam gallagher on his list of “beautiful people” he’d love to eat. inexplicably, he’d also like to sink his teeth into barry manilow.

when it comes to robbie and liam, i suppose i can understand the beautiful part (though i prefer robbie; liam is kind of a cunt). as for mr. manilow, i’m going to have to assume meiwes hasn’t seen a recent photo of the queeny crooner.

    a questionable endorsement

    2006 - 02.24

notmyselfthesedays.jpgit’s got all the ingredients of a successful memoir: drama, scandal and intrigue. just one thing stood in the way – a supportive quote on the cover from an author who had fallen from grace.

the original cover for josh kilmer-purcell’s new book, i am not myself these days, featured a quote from james frey, the now-notorious “man who conned oprah.”

after frey’s credibility was shattered, the publishers of kilmer-purcell’s book quickly changed the cover (which said “a wonderful book, a ridiculous book, a sad and beautiful book, a book i’ll read again, a book i highly recommend”). frey’s adulation has since been replaced and a photo of that first cover is now virtually impossible to find (i searched for an hour to find this one!). i guess now even james frey’s opinions are suspect.

i find it hard to overlook the irony of this situation. frey revitalized the memoir genre, and when he initially endorsed kilmer-purcell, the publisher allegedly upped the printing from 20 to 100 thousand.

on a final note, this controversy has served its purpose by piquing my interest in not myself these days, which tells the story of a drag queen’s rocky romance with a crackhead (hell yeah!). maybe it’ll be my next choice for book club.

    ‘ex-gays’ come together

    2006 - 02.22

in what promises to be one of the biggest-ever gathering of re-closeted queers, an “ex-gay” convention is being held this saturday in st. louis. the event’s organizer, mike haley, said that it is important for “unsatisfied” homosexuals to know that they can “change” their sexual orientation. he did not say whether or not it will involve brainwashing or electro-shock therapy.

only one thing is for certain. a lot of “ex-gays” are going to fall off the wagon this weekend! at least be safe, alright guys? and try not to hate yourself too much in the morning.

    gwen’s sixth single surprise

    2006 - 02.22

even pregnancy can’t keep gwen stefani out of the spotlight. while the immiment arrival of her firstborn may restrict her public life, the orange county girl makes up for it by releasing an unprecedented sixth single from her multi-platinum solo debut, love. angel. music. baby.

that song, “crash,” is about as mindless as “hollaback girl,” which means it is just as catchy and almost guaranteed to be a huge success. of course, pregger gwen planned ahead by having a performance video filmed last november during her harajuku lovers tour. we’re still waiting to hear about the clip’s premiere…

UPDATE: aol music’s got the video! i’m a bit disappointed they didn’t use the live audio, but i can understand. gwen’s vocals aren’t always great live – she moves around too much! (thanks popbytes!)
