pink says f the president… and i agree

pink2.jpg

a friend of mine passed along a special treat today: a sampling of pink’s new album, i’m not dead. i was already super excited about this record, and after hearing it, i must say that i was completely blown away. i dare say it’s even better than pink’s biggest success thus far, m!ssundaztood.

yes, “stupid girls” is fantastic… but it’s not the album’s shining star. the track that really moved me was her open letter to our commander-in-chief, “dear mr. president” (which features the indigo girls, by the way). i intentionally refrain from being overly political on here, because the aim of this blog is to be light, fun and entertaining. but damn! pink really hit this one out of the park. “president” is perhaps the most brazen, scathing political statement i’ve heard in ages, and i couldn’t have said it any better.

i’ll let you judge by giving you a sample of my favorite lyrics, starting with the chorus:

“how do you sleep while the rest of us cry / how do you dream when a mother has no chance to say good-bye / how do you walk with your head held high / can you even look me in the eye and tell me why”

“how can you say no child is left behind / we’re not dumb and we’re not blind / they’re all sitting in your cells / while you pave the road to hell”

“what kind of father would take his own daughter’s rights away / and what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay / i can only imagine what the first lady has to say / you’ve come a long way from whiskey and cocaine”

hell yeah, pink! you are my hero.

Well, I would like it if it didn’t have a horrible rip-off of an r.e.m. song, also against bush, that doesn’t have to be so blunt to get its point across.

The song is called “Final Straw” (Around the Sun, 2004). and here’s the lyric in question:

“With conviction, tell me why.
Tell me why.
Tell me why.
Look me in the eye.
Tell me why.”

those looking for flaws will most certainly find them, there is also a finite number of words that rhyme with ‘eye’ that also suit the intended meaning. don’t be so rough on Pink. I’m sure she has a hell of a lot of humilty regarding REM, she’s a smart girl. She knows they are heavies.
another way you could look at your idea of a rip-off, is that it’s just another version, that will reach a different audience, and in my wee opinion, the more ears hearing the message the better.

I do not like the song. No one is forced to join the military, they decide on their own and are paid. Also, no one is perfect, the president is a good man and has to deal with this crap all the time. I would really like to see some of these people complaining do a better job of running the country. I cannot imagine how stressful a job like that is.

The president once said that it’s Gods will, that we enter the war of Iraq. The president once said the reason for going to war is Iraqi links to the terrorists of 9/11 and are also building Weapons of Mass Destruction. The president is not a honest man, he is a liar. To say that it’s Gods will, puts him in the same range as Bin Ladin, who probably also says it’s Gods will to attack the US.

i think the song is great!! if the president of our great states cannot handle stress, I would be very worried how he handles a whole country!!! he knows exactly what he is doing. Pink, way to go!!

This song is probably the first of any bald statement that puts it all out there to the president and his actions. Our president is not a good man by definition, a good man would not have given up the sacred wilderness act that protected thousands of acres of land in the US for big business; a good man would not have decided to destroy a man’s wife because the man would not lie and fake documents to support his war, a good man would not give tax cuts that primarily and obviously gave the wealthiest more, the poorest little and then cut the programs that give those who have nothing an upperhand. A good man would not have gone to war in Iraq and deliberately lied to his people about it and then deliberately break the law by “spying” on his fellow citizens.
Therefore, way to go Pink, for saying what noone else who has power really wants to say:
“How can you hold your head up high and look me in the eye?”

Things are not as simple as idiots like Pink think they are. The president cannot just decide to “end homelessness” and he is doing what he and A WHOLE LOT OF VERY, VERY INTELLIGENT ADVISORS deem appropriate. If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. Singing songs is definitely NOT part of any kind of solution - if you really want to get your message out, then do it in an intelligent manner and present ALL the facts. The president is doing what he can…and just ’cause you don’t like him, doesn’t mean he isn’t a good man with good intentions, doing the best he can with limited resources. Pink - YOU ARE JUST AS BAD AS THOSE “STUPID GIRLS” YOU SING ABOUT. f-off already.

Hi!
I simply adore Pink’s new record! Dear Mr. President is an ok song. Not very original, the idea of dedicating a song to him (Dylan, Tracy Chapman and recently Ms Dynamite in Mr Prime Minister)… But hey… at least she’s speaking her mind!
And just so you know, i am european (german) and am shocked to read above that your president is a “good man”… Thank goodness only a minority think like that here! Even though more than 50% of americans believe that (he was reelected no?) Cheers.
PS Can someone explain the daughter lines?

Want to make a difference?

Request to have this song played on your favorite radio station (again and again). Email it to your entire address book. Get it out there. Buy this song! Make it #1.

This will not only get the message out there–one that will surely strike a chord with America’s conscience, but it will also encourge other entertainers to write and perform similar songs.

Do it. While you still have the freedom to.

The daughter lines have to do with political issues. Bush opposes abortion (”taking his own daughter’s rights away”) and gay rights (”what kind of father would hate his own daughter if she were gay”).

The daughter line is about abortion but the gay line is a reference to Dick Chaney.
