many fans of out magazine were a bit afraid when a straight guy took over, myself included. while i have yet to peruse the new issue, from what i have heard so far i am encouraged - and a little bit excited.
editor aaron hicklin’s quote about the rag’s new direction is what really piques my interest. he says he wants it to be more “bowie gay rather than cher gay.” this makes me happy, even if it might alienate a large group of readers. i think it’s important to show that we are a diverse group of people, and at the same time, that we are an influential pack of trendsetters… and c’mon, how would we do this with cher? the spirit of bowie is much more inherently cool.
so here’s hoping that hicklin keeps things headed in the right direction. i think his high aspirations are admirable and i would love for a gay mag to be in competition with the big (straight) guns of the publishing world. just like progression in every other field, let’s keep it going, one step at a time.
