beautiful muse

mattmuse.jpgpoor matthew bellamy. his band, muse, has been accused of ripping off radiohead ever since their major-labed debut back in ‘99. their new album, black holes & revelations, has already invited similar criticisms.

the new disc was unsurprisingly trashed by the pricks at pitchfork (they’ve always been unrepentant music snobs, even if they have their selective pop-friendly moments)… and while bellamy’s vocals in particular can be embarrassingly akin to those of thom yorke, you have to admit that radiohead have never been this much fun.

even beyond lead single “supermassive black hole,” there are several songs on here that flaunt undeniable hooks (especially my fave, “starlight”) - without a trace of radiohead’s notorious pretentiousness. for me, even if muse are shameless copycats, their pop sensibilities are refreshing.

in the most amusing of ironies, the album is tipped to top the u.k. charts next week. reviews be damned! this means, of course, that the boys will be crying all the way to the bank.
