gnarls barkley’s bad move

gnarlsbarkley.jpgi was worried that this would happen. after the smashing success of gnarls barkley’s brilliant debut single, “crazy,” they wouldn’t be able to top themselves.

in the u.k., the band had a minor hit with “smiley faces.” even though the video boasted a cameo from dennis hopper, the track was not chosen as the follow-up in the states. instead, a video has just been released for a different song, a cover of violent femmes “gone daddy gone.” especially considering the inventive video for “crazy,” this clip is nothing short of a disaster.

the idea is cute. cee-lo and dangermouse are portrayed as animated bugs, and the outcome is fairly convincing. things never really take off, unfortunately. like a scrapped scene from honey, i shrunk the kids, the bugs crawl up the leg of a pretty blonde. my immediate reaction was, where the hell are they going?? and are they going to show us when they get there?? ha!

then, to make it even worse, the last 30 seconds of the video shows a human-sized bug in a bed with the blonde. what the fuck? not only is it disgusting, it’s ridiculous.

i had high hopes for you, gnarls barkley! unless you want to join the dubious ranks of the countless other one-hit wonders, i suggest you come up with something a little more clever than this.
