unless you live in the u.k., you probably have no idea. leona is, in fact, the latest popstar-in-waiting to win a reality show karaoke contest. she recently triumphed on x-factor, a singing competition featuring simon cowell that isn’t all that different from pop idol (and its american counterpart).
the silliest thing about all this concerns the show producers’ choice for leona’s first single. compare, if you will, her version of “a moment like this” with a performance from the original american idol, kelly clarkson. leona does an adequate job, i suppose, but i think she’s about as exciting as a paper bag.
maybe i’d think differently if i’d been watching x-factor, i don’t know. but really this just makes me feel like we don’t need any new popstars.
