at least now the curtains match the drapes

britneysbald.jpgapparently britney spears wanted her head shaved like her lady parts, so she went ahead and did it herself… before getting a few new tattoes. of course, video cameras captured the entire thing through the window. i shit you not. watch it yourself via cnn.com.

there have been all sorts of rumors about her losing it, and after this i doubt her rep will be able to deny it any longer. i want to know how sean preston reacted. he was probably terrified of the scary bald monster!

that said, i don’t really think it looks that horrible. even with her dumbo ears, she’s much prettier than sinead. i’ll give her that.

global warming

whirlwindheat.jpg

who are these snow angels? they’re whirlwind heat, a michigan-based band with a penchant for stripping down to their skivvies, both on-stage and off.

i came across these guys by chance, and in fact they’re music didn’t really touch me inappropriately, but how could i pass up a gratuitous picture post? after the jump, check out a few more of david, brandon and steve — three new hot rockstars — wearing next to nothing.

top of the pops

nellyfurtado3.jpgcongratulations are in order for nelly furtado, who scored her second u.s. no. 1 single today with “say it right.” her rise to the peak of the billboard chart ends the seemingly eternal reign of beyonce, who remained on top with “irreplaceable” for basically as long as i can remember.

nelly better enjoy it while she can, cos she’s got some stiff competition hot on her heels. if things go according to plan, gwen will overtake her in the next week or two with “the sweet escape”… just don’t let fergie ferg get to no. 1!! it will only encourage her to punish us with another dreadful solo record.

use your imagination

petewentzblender.jpg

you don’t really have to imagine, really. i mean, we’ve all seen it before.

anyway, in the new issue of blender pete wentz admits he isn’t against some homo tonsil hockey. the reporter asked, “so, make-out king, you’ve kissed boys?” pete replied, “i have. anybody above the waist is fair game.”

oh, come on! if you’re cool with some smoochin’, what’s to stop you from heading downtown? methinks there’s more to this story than he’s letting on.

fashion forward

imogenheap.jpghere’s imogen heap, a nominee for best new artist, on the red carpet at last night’s grammy awards.

i’m not sure why she chose this garden geisha get-up. i can handle the paper umbrella and the white gloves, i suppose. the lilypads on her skirt are in very poor taste, but it doesn’t really surprise me coming from her… what really sets this apart is the shrubbery coming out of her head! i mean, that shit is what legends are made of. she’s approaching bjork territory here — only this isn’t nearly as clever.

unfortunately, imogen wasn’t given much screen time on the telecast. and of course the bitch didn’t win, so she didn’t get to explain her crazy ass. pity.

klaxons kismet

klaxon.jpg

u.k. “new rave” outfit klaxons have garnered plenty of buzz, though i didn’t know what all the fuss was about until today. when i was listening to radio 1’s chart show, i happened to catch their latest single, “golden skans,” and yes, it is just as amazing as nme said

…which brings us to the rapturous video. somehow the trippy clip, the ¡viva la graham! video of the week, enhances an already-outrageous affair, even if it hardly makes a lick of sense. really, all you need to know is that the band is floating through space wrapped up in shiny ribbons — and nothing else. enjoy!

grass is always greener

charlottehatherley.jpg

i was nervous when i heard charlotte hatherley had left ash to strike out on her own. she did release a vibrant, successful solo effort (in the u.k. at least), grey will fade, in 2004 while on a hiatus from the band, but i still had reservations.

her new disc, the deep blue, has leaked onto the internet ahead of its march release, and i’m sorry to report that it isn’t nearly up to par. then again, after two tepid singles in a row — “behave” late last year and “i want you to know” next week — this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

i propose that charlotte bin this record, rejoin her old band, and we can all pretend this never happened. no? well, at the very least let’s numb the pain with an “oldie-but-goodie” from her first album. here’s the video for “summer”:

venus hum shines bright with ‘colors’

venushum.jpg

here’s a review of venus hum’s latest album that i wrote for dancemusic.about.com:

“it took three years for venus hum to release the full-length follow-up to their breakthrough debut, big beautiful sky. after touring with blue man group, each member of the nashville-based trio pursued separate interests, both personal and professional.

lucky for us, they reconvened for their much-anticipated sophomore effort, the colors in the wheel. while it’s still a moderately upbeat, diverse electronic affair, this record is predominantly darker and more aggressive than its predecessor.

consider “do you want to fight me?,” on which vocalist annette strean infuses her angelic delivery with a surprising amount of provocative scorn. “so you want to fight me / with your one good eye,” she sings. “and do you think you can beat me / hmm, well come on, come on.”

venus hum has evolved into something more multi-dimensional, but the group hasn’t abandoned the euphoric electronic soundscape that has been its signature. “genevieve’s wheel” and “go to sleep” both evoke sublime lullabies, whereas the brief, untitled musical interludes throughout the colors in the wheel act as a fitting sonic link between tracks that might otherwise seem slightly disjointed.

other highlights include the single “pink champagne,” a bubbly mid-tempo confection, and “yes and no,” a raging synth-heavy stomper.

it’s actually difficult to find fault with the album. perhaps a few songs don’t really distinguish themselves, but that’s the worst one could say about them. without these more subtle touches, however, the album might not seem complete. in other words, every color in this beautiful wheel contributes to its ultimate success.”

for the love of alfie

i know that every other site on the web has already posted the new lily allen video for “alfie,” but i how could i ignore it? any clip that features a pot-smoking puppet deserves the attention. it is, of course, the video of the week.

seriously, this is almost as fab as when kylie sang with kermit the frog. almost.

all hail sarah silverman

sarahsilverman.jpg

it’s wacky, wild, lewd and crude — and i loved every minute of it. the sarah silverman program debuted recently to predominantly positive reviews and great ratings, so it looks like comedy central might have a new hit on its hands.

in case you missed the first episode of the delightfully absurd program, the plots included a fart contest gone awry, a sassy loch ness monster and several references to vaginas. it’s rarely coherent, actually, but i was laughing out loud throughout. oh yeah, and just like in sarah’s raunchy comedy flick jesus is magic, she breaks into silly songs at the drop of a hat.

check out the show’s web site for a handful of clips… and tune in this thursday at 10:30 eastern / 9:30 central for a brand new episode.
