i’ve always had a soft spot for travis. i’ve seen the scottish band perform several times — i was present for their infamous glastonbury appearance in 1999 — and i even sang a karaoke version of their most famous track, “why does it always rain on me,” in the glasgow watering hole they frequented back in the day.
i guess you could say travis and me, we’re growing old together. so it pains me to say this, but they’re aging a bit too quickly for me! their sleepy new single, “closer,” is lovely (stream it at myspace), but i can’t help but feel like they’ve done it before. when a band is away for 4 years, they need to come back with a bang, and this really isn’t it.
to the band’s credit, the video clip is irresistible (randomly, ben stiller turns up for a brief cameo!). frontman fran healy is still absolutely adorable and therefore i feel like shit for not immediately falling in love with the song. maybe i was expecting more, i’m not sure, but i know travis have something more lively left in them. i guess they just need to be shaken out of that afternoon nap.
