natural beauty

liza.jpg

oh good gracious. i know liza minelli is like sixty years old, but this photo of her without make-up is frightening. it looks like she was trying to hide under that hat, but somebody spotted her and asked for an autograph. the look on her face totally says “busted.” hopefully she’ll learn from this mistake.

it’s the thought that counts

madonnaheadshot.jpgfor a limited time, you can legally download a free mp3 of the new madonna track “hey you” at msn’s live earth site. pharrell williams co-produced the mellow, “little drummer boy”-style song with madonna, and apparently madge is going to perform it at london’s live earth concert this summer.

unfortunately, the song is just okay. and that’s being nice, really. it moves at a snail’s pace and the lyrics are mediocre. it definitely doesn’t compare to any of madonna’s big singles. at the very least, i admire her for giving some of the proceeds to charity, but i still wish she had come up with something better. oh well, it must be difficult to be inspirational and edgy.

final stretch

robinthicke.jpghere’s beat-boxer blake lewis on last night’s american idol singing robin thicke’s “when i get you alone.” i thought it was a fantastic performance, but whether or not he makes it to the finale is anyone’s guess. he did a good job on maroon 5’s “this love” as well, so i’m rooting for him (and you don’t see me posting any jordin sparks vids, do you?).

as for mr. thicke, i prefer this song to his newer material. i guess the falsetto he’s rockin’ on “lost without u” just doesn’t do it for me, but apparently i’m in the minority. then again, i often admire the scruffy, long-haired look, so maybe that has something to do with it. hmmm…

triumphant return

mollys.jpgmolly shannon, i love you!! the snl alum returned to her home turf last night — and she brought back mary katherine gallagher, among other familiar favorites.

she was only the 2nd former female cast member to ever come back and host, and unlike julia louis-dreyfuss, she had a host of characters to resuscitate (including sally o’malley and jeanie darcy). she was there to hype her new flick, year of the dog, but her visit wasn’t just promotional. the look on her face when she emerged for the monologue was priceless. she was obviously so happy to be back — it’s such an accomplishment! — and she could hardly contain herself.

after the jump, i’ve got one skit from last night. not the best from the show, but it shows my girl in top form. cameltoe forever!

sarah silverman hosts movie awards live

sarahsilvermanmtv.jpgapparently i didn’t get the memo that sarah silverman will be hosting the mtv movie awards june 3. two words: hell yeah!

since the event isn’t broadcast on hbo, she unfortunately won’t be able to be as crass as usual, but as we have learned from her successful comedy central show, she can be hysterically funny without using overtly “offensive” language. the show is going live for the first time ever (it’s about time), so those censors better be ready in case sarah drops an f-bomb or brings up her vagina!

a few performers have been announced as well. amy winehouse will be singing (hopefully she’ll remember her dentures!), and jay-z will join rihanna to sing “umbrella,” which everybody but me seems to be raving about. go figure.

nearly flawless

siobhand.jpgthat’s how i’d describe the new siobhan donaghy single “so you say,” and the video is breathtaking as well. the only part of the clip that throws me is the bit at the end, when she kisses that creepy guy with sparks in his mouth and sort of becomes a zombie (or something?). what is that about??

other than that, i’m very pleased with the ex-sugababe. after a so-so attempt at a solo comeback a few months back, i was afraid she would begin a descent into oblivion. au contraire! “so you say” is lush and ethereal yet still accessible to the average pop music fan. this should definitely put her career back on track.

jane fonda gets frisky

janefondacolbert.jpgjane fonda stopped by the colbert report last night to make out with the host. no, seriously. she sat in his lap and wouldn’t budge for the entire interview. in between his random questions (”what was it like working with lindsay lohan?” - haha!), she nibbled on his ear and gushed about his sweet lips.

it was fantastic to see colbert look so uncomfortable, since he’s normally the one causing the awkwardness. it really seemed like he had no idea what to do, so he played along. lord knows what really possessed jane fonda to kiss and cuddle with him (she claimed to have a crush on him), but it certainly made for good television. view the saucy interview over at comedycentral.com.

tear-jerker

carrieunderwood2.jpgcarrie underwood scored her second u.s. pop top 10 with this rendition of the pretenders’ “i’ll stand by you” (american idol single “inside your heaven” went to no. 1, but most singles from debut some hearts have fared better on the country charts).

the track, which currently sits at no. 6 on the billboard hot 100, manages to successfully transform chrissie hynde’s tender commitment to her lover into a passionate promise of hope. the heartbreaking video was shot when carrie visited poverty-stricken areas in africa, and it originally aired a few weeks ago on the idol gives back special.

i’m pretty blown away by carrie’s vocals. it certainly trumps the version recorded by british pop group girls aloud a few years back.

possible explanation

amywinehouse.jpgapparently there’s a reason why amy winehouse doesn’t smile in her press photos. before now i just thought it was because she was trying to project a tough-girl image. you know, since her songs are often about strong women or refusing to go to rehab, etc.

as her songs also say, ms. winehouse has a taste for tanqueray, stella, and countless other alcoholic beverages. and it turns out her penchant for overdoing it in the booze department might have contributed to that mysterious close-mouthed look she’s been working. i knew she had taken a tumble or two, but apparently a few of her teeth have been offered up to the party gods as penance for bad behavior.

yes, amy’s missing a few. and it sure ain’t pretty…

amywinehouseteeth.jpg

i’m not sure when this was taken, but damn! if she hasn’t already taken care of this, she really needs to asap. it looks like she’s sporting one of those fake plastic sets of redneck chompers you can buy at tacky gift shops. definitely not hot.

keep me entertained, baby

sophieellisb.jpgi’ve been meaning to post the new sophie ellis bextor video for a few weeks now, but somehow it kept slipping my mind. thanks to the boys at queerty for reminding me by finally mentioning the clip for her last single, “catch you.”

“me and my imagination” is much more cheerful, less manic than the lead track from her upcoming album, trip the light fantastic, and the playful video echoes that feeling. sophie struts her way through minimal street scenes that suddenly morph into vibrant neon outlines. then, naturally, choreographed dancing ensues… it’s pretty cheesy, but not intolerably so. i’m just glad to have sophie back at the top of her game, and i can’t wait to hear the rest of the album.
