Some people think Colin Farrell looks too thin in this recent photo — is it for a role, or is it drugs? Well, I don’t see a problem. He might need a shower or a quick dip in the sea, but either way is fine with me. And I know you’re staring at his package, so don’t pretend you’re better than me.
Check out “I Kissed a Boy,” a raunchy take on Katy Perry’s ubiquitous “I Kissed a Girl.” The visuals are taken from vintage gay porn (though the clip doesn’t really show any nudity), and the lyrics go from “I kissed a boy” to “I fucked a dude” at the very end. Ha!
A spoof was bound to happen sooner or later, and I’m mostly happy with these results. It’s very cliche, yes, but the lyrics are at times absolutely hysterical (example: “My head collided with your lap / It’s not like you fought me …. I sucked a dick and I liked it / The taste of your sweaty love stick”). I wish it had better vocals, but that’s my only complaint.
Here’s Katy’s version, in case you haven’t seen it:
Icelandic band Sigur Rós, a longtime favorite of hipsters and radical faeries alike, released their latest album this week, Me Su Í Eyrum Vi Spilum Endalaust (Translation: With a Buzz in Our Ears We Play Endlessly). I’ve always been kind of ambivalent about the band, though I can appreciate what they’re doing. However, I do like their recent choices when it comes to promotional materials.
The new album cover (pictured, right) depicts naked dudes running toward the horizon (that might be a chick in the lead!), much in the same vein of their co-ed video for the disc’s first single, “Gobbledigook.” Check out the bohemian clip and download the track for free here. Unfortunately I don’t believe any of the band members make a cameo.
I must give a big thank you to my girl Amber, who recently turned me on to New York-based rocker Santogold. Honestly — and I wouldn’t use this phrase if it wasn’t true — this bitch is fierce!
Here’s the video for “L.E.S. Artistes,” which came out in the U.S. in March so I’m a little late (sorry about that!). The track is fab — it reminds me a little bit of Yeah Yeah Yeahs — and the clip is seriously insane. In a good way. I’ll never think of chili peppers quite the same.
Coldplay rises to the summit of the singles chart this week with “Viva la Vida,” marking the first time the band has done so (the only track to crack the U.S. top 20 previously was “Speed of Sound,” which peaked at No. 8 in 2005). What a difference an iTunes commercial can do for a singles’ profile (see below). Chris Martin & co. will debut atop the album charts next week with their fourth disc, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends.
Elsewhere in the top ten, Katy Perry (photo below) is still gaining strength at No. 2 with her infectious bi-curious anthem “I Kissed A Girl,” and I must admit that I love that shit! Good luck to Ms. Perry in the longevity department, because that track has one-hit wonder written all over it (though honestly I think she’s talented enough to keep the momentum going).
A little further down, Leona Lewis is still mulling around after ages with “Bleeding Love” at No. 4. Natasha Bedingfield continues to thrive on mediocrity at No. 6 with “Pocketful of Sunshine (I like her, I do, but this song is not her best!). Most interestingly, pop-rock act Metro Station scores its first top ten with “Shake It,” a terribly inane but completely irresistible electro-pop confection that will likely stick around for the remainder of the summer. They remind me a bit of Hellogoodbye, actually…
Bad news for Mariah Carey, however. Sappy-sad single “Bye Bye,” her calculated attempt at a nineteenth No. 1, dropped out of the top twenty this week after a disappointing peak of 19. At least Mimi’s got a man to dry her tears!
Here it is, finally! The video premiere of “Shut Up and Let Me Go” by the Ting Tings, the group’s debut U.S. single — a track that’s gotten a big boost from a colorful iPod commercial.
I really like where they went with this. It’s a slick clip, but still outrageous enough to appeal to an edgier audience. Well done! And doesn’t singer Katie White look gorgeous??
Arctic Monkeys fans, listen up! A similar U.K. rock band called The Wombats have a new single, “Let’s Dance to Joy Division,” and it is available for free on iTunes for a limited time. I think these guys are a bit more hook-oriented, so if that’s your style you’ll totally dig it! Honestly, the track is killer, so even if you don’t read this in time, I’d recommend forking over 99 cents for the download.
If you really like what you hear, The Wombats’ debut album, A Guide to Love, Loss and Desperation, is out in the States on June 24.
If we’re lucky, Lady GaGa will conquer America in the coming months. Her promising debut single “Just Dance” (watch the video above) fuses modern electronic music with retro dance-pop — and the track is a guaranteed floor-filler at your summer soiree.
As an added bonus, the cheeky lyrics tell the tale of party excess: “What’s going on on the floor/ I love this record baby but I can’t see straight anymore / Keep it cool, what’s the name of this club? / I can’t remember but it’s alright / Just dance.” I know I’ve been there!

Hey, I’m not whining. Jason Mraz is a hot piece. And this isn’t the first time the knife-weilding exhibitionist has flaunted the goods…
Jason’s latest disc, We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things, is now available online or at fine retailers everywhere. Just so you know.
