For the Love of David Cook

    2008 - 10.31

A friend of mine said American Idol victor David Cook looks a little bit gay in this photo, the cover art for new single “Light On,” but that’s probably because her husband (let’s call him John) has a major man-crush on the arena-rock crooner. ”It’s exactly the song he needed to release,” John said with a twinkle in his eyes. What he really wanted to say was, “I wonder what his stubble would feel like on my cheek.” Or, “When he hits those low notes I want him to hold me in his arms.”

I think it’s a very catchy track, though unfortunately it comes off as slightly contrived. In fact, it’s nearly indistinguishable from the typical tunes of another Idol alum, Daughtry. Of course, that could work in Cook’s favor — Chris Daughtry’s band sold nearly 5 million records.

David performs on SNL this weekend, and his self-titled debut drops Nov 18.

    John is very excited.

    Lady GaGa Has Arrived

    2008 - 10.29

If you have yet to hear The Fame, the debut by future superstar Lady GaGa, you are in for a treat. The album finally dropped in her native U.S. yesterday, and it’s a surprisingly versatile effort. Obviously it’s packed with peppy floor-fillers a la “Boys Boys Boys,” an irresistible slice of kitschy dance-pop perfection, but it also includes a few gorgeous ’80s-era Cyndi Lauper-inspired ballads (“Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)”). It’s definitely a party soundtrack from start to finish.

I was lucky enough to catch the diva in action in L.A. last week at Tigerheat for her big CD release party. She certainly packed in the fags (and their admirers) for the massive celebration, where she pleased the eager, sweaty crowd with a 20-minute set featuring new single “Poker Face” (watch the stunning video below) and global smash “Just Dance.” I took in the show from the balcony, and even in the rafters the revelers were majorly impressed. Back in Nashville, we’re throwing down in honor of GaGa at Tribe tonight! Of course I will be there.

    Britney’s New Video Succeeds

    2008 - 10.11

…thanks to director Joseph Kahn, the man behind Ms. Spears’ infamous “Toxic” clip. “Womanizer” employs the same general technique, with Britney taking on multiple personas and pretty much kicking ass. She looks fantastic, I must admit, and she even has a nude scene in a sauna to show off her new bod.

I have two favorite parts: when Britney photocopies her ass and rips it up in front of the extremely hot womanizer in question; and when she leaps into the backseat of a limousine she is driving and steers with her high heel. Brilliant! Especially for someone with a history of driving problems.

One final note… If only “Womanizer” didn’t sound like a Pussycat Dolls cast-off. Then I’d be totally sold.

If the above video doesn’t work, try here.

    Bloc Party Reveals Sharp Talons

    2008 - 10.04

Post-punk Brit rockers Bloc Party released their third album, Intimacy, last month, yet the band’s latest single seems to be more about the imminent end of a turbulent relationship. Not exactly new territory, but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, that’s what I say.

The video for “Talons” matches the foreboding tone of the track. A shirtless Kele Okereke runs down a dimly lit industrial corridor, but what is he running from? I’m not sure, but he certainly looks fit.

All in all, this is a powerful, up-tempo single that could help Bloc Party regain the success they achieved in the U.S. with their stunning debut, Silent Alarm. It may sound too familiar for long time fans, but I’m not complaining. I’ve definitely got this one in heavy rotation.

    In Defense of Kenley

    2008 - 10.03

If you don’t watch or you simply dislike Project Runway, you might want to skip this post.

Ok, I’m in the minority here, but I actually adore Kenley Collins, the hapless villian of the reality show’s current season (which has not been a snore, in my humble opinion, though some backlash has begun).

Sure, I can understand why her uncontrollable giggling on the runway might make her seem arrogant and a bit rude. And I can see why host Heidi Klum complained about Kenley’s attitude problem after being snapped at by the designer several times.

So why am I rooting for the misunderstood diva? Perhaps it’s her pluckiness, which I admire. (Is she labeled the “bitch” because she’s a woman??) But I’ve also really liked many of the creations she’s sent down the catwalk (though perhaps not that fuschia nightmare with the scales, sorry Kenley!).

Also, I’m often a fan of the underdog. I can’t blame Kenley for wanting to scratch out the other contestant’s eyes when they wouldn’t share their unused tulle in Wednesday’s episode — or not joining the group hug after being dissed by all when the judges asked who didn’t deserve a spot in the finale. That was a major “Fuck You!”

Will Kenley triumph in the finale? Admittedly her chances are slim – but anything could happen if she doesn’t present a collection of vintage-looking frocks (and surely she’s got a few tricks up her short puffy sleeves). I’m hoping she pulls it off, just because it’d be a major upset. And for Kenley, victory would be the sweetest revenge.

    Katy Perry Brings It

    2008 - 10.02

I know some of you are sick of this bitch, but I actually kind of like Katy Perry. Even if I could live without hearing “I Kissed A Girl” for at least five years.

Here’s her new video for “Hot ‘N Cold,” which I’ve been blasting for ages, so it’s about time she got this together. The clip has a wedding theme with a hesitant groom who runs from the altar. Naturally, there is plenty of dancing and several costume changes… One thing is for sure, Katy sure has the Glenn-Close-in-Fatal-Attraction act down pat. Yikes!
