Cream Alert: New Peaches Single, Album

    2009 - 04.29

Peaches: I Feel CreamIt’s about time! Raunchy electronic artist Peaches recently debuted her steamy new video, “Talk to Me,” and it definitely does not disappoint. The track is classic Peaches, with a sexy, pulsating beat and her high-pitched, aggressive vocals. It’s a slow-burner, and like much of Peaches’ previous work, it will work well in the bedroom for those on the wilder side.

Next week she is unleashing her new album, I Feel Cream, which is sure to feature several dirty dancefloor fillers. And can we talk about the title for a moment? I think it works well alongside past records Fatherfucker and Impeach My Bush. You got to respect the bitch for being so unabashedly sexually-liberated.

Sara Beck: A Lover and a Fighter

    2009 - 04.24

    Sara Beck

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Sara Beck has finally unveiled her debut full-length disc, a fantastic collection of folk-country-pop songs called Music for Lovers and Fighters. Though her sound is refreshingly original, it’s often reminiscent of Taylor Swift in pop mode, Colbie Callait minus the smirk, and Bonnie Raitt at her most soulful.

My favorite on the album has to be “Highs & Lows,” a clever kiss-off to a good-for-nothing ex. It’s as good, if not better, than anything you’ll hear on pop radio at the moment. Check it out:

Beck is celebrating the record’s release with a performance in Music City on April 30 at 12th and Porter. A copy of the CD is yours with the price of admission. See you there!

In the Back of the Van with Mute Math

    2009 - 04.21

New Orleans-based rock act Mute Math finally unveiled the manic video for latest single “Spotlight,” a raucous, infectious creation complete with hand claps and distorted guitars. The clip appears simple enough — the dapper gents play the song in the back of a moving van — but repeated views reveal much more than a simple performance. It’s impressive and imaginative in the same vein as the band’s video for “Typical.”

The track originally emerged on the Twilight soundtrack last year, making it Mute Math’s second soundtrack entry after its Transformers theme. The group’s full-length sophomore release is due this summer.

Monday Morning Motivation : PNAU ft. Ladyhawke

    2009 - 04.20

    ladyhawke

I’m still not sick of Ladyhawke’s self-titled debut, so imagine my delight when I heard she had lent her vocal stylists to a synth-dance track by Australia’s PNAU called “Embrace.” The song is more club-oriented than most of Ladyhawke’s solo material, but with a big chorus and longing lyrics, it suits her quite well.

The New Zealand native, whose real name is Phillipa ‘Pip’ Brown, made waves in the U.S. last month thanks to a few Stateside performances — including one at SXSW — but she has yet to garner the major attention she deserves in North America. Pity.

Listen to “Embrace” here. It will definitely get you going on a dreary Monday morning.

    Cat Ladies Can Surprise You

    2009 - 04.15

Meet my new favorite cat lady, 47-year-old Susan Boyle, a frumpy, scrappy Brit who shocked everyone this week with her angelic voice on Britain’s Got Talent. After a slightly-awkward interview with the judges (including Simon Cowell), her flawless performance of Les Miserable’s “I Dream A Dream” stunned the entire crowd, most of whom expected her to be a joke. Honestly, I was moved to tears by Susan’s triumph — as was she.

The viral video I posted above has since exploded on the internet, making the unknown singer an instant sensation. Word is that she’s already in talks with Cowell’s management team. Her kitty definitely has a new scratching post coming!

On the image front, something tells me Susan will be getting a makeover very soon, though I think she’s pretty fucking awesome just as she is. And on a final note, when she went to her local church on Easter Sunday, the congregation gave her a standing ovation! Precious.

I’m In Love with New Royksopp

    2009 - 04.08

    robyn

“Happy Up Here” was a fitting introduction to the peppy new material from Royksopp, but I’m obsessed with “The Girl and the Robot,” featuring sassy Swede Robyn. The dance track is on deck as single no. 2 from Royksopp’s new album Junior, but if you were a fan of Robyn’s last LP, this will definitely hold you over till her next effort.

Speaking of new Robyn material, she recently told a Swedish news site that she hopes to start recording in early 2009. Get to work, girl!
