Friendly Fires Brings ‘Life’ to Debut Album

    2009 - 07.29

British indie act Friendly Fires just unveiled brand new single “Kiss of Life,” an urgent, tribal track that features on the forthcoming re-release of the band’s self-titled debut album. The colorful video, shot in Ibiza, portrays front man Ed Macfarlane dancing with bandmates amidst the ocean and a troupe of masked bongo players. It offers a stark contrast to recent hit “Skeleton Boy,” a slick synth-pop song that was accompanied by a mostly black-and-white promo clip. The group excels at both styles while still retaining an instantly recognizable sound, an impressive feat to say the least.

Congratulations are also in order, as Friendly Fires was recently shortlisted for a coveted nomination for the 2009 Mercury Prize. It remains to be seen whether the fantastic addition of “Kiss of Life” will fuel the fire, so to speak. Best of luck to them.

    The Sounds Bounce Back

    2009 - 07.28

    The Sounds

I’m a major fan of Sweden’s The Sounds, but I wasn’t terribly keen on the first single, “No One Sleeps When I’m Awake,” from new album Crossing the Rubicon. Fortunately for fans, second single “Beatbox” is a definite crowd-pleaser. Like most songs by the synth-rockers, it’s not entirely complex, but the guitar-driven track features Maja Ivarsson actually rapping the verses. She pulls it off effortlessly, and it’s a fun change of pace for the band.

    Donkeyboy: Norway’s New Dark Darlings

    2009 - 07.28

Much in the same vein as kooky Norwegian pop stars like Bertine, fresh faced pop-rock act Donkeyboy currently top the charts in their native Norway with a deceptively cynical single called “Ambitions.” The brooding, electro-retro song is actually quite good on its own — but there’s more!

Giving it a little extra push, the track is accompanied by a bizarrely enthralling video, in which the clip’s characters catch a fictional (?!?) disease called Abricere Leprous: “The fatal disease is caused by giving up your ambitions. It generally begins with a vesicular skin rash, and quickly spreads and destroys the entire body.” Strange yet equally genius. Kudos, Donkeyboy! I’m instantly on board.

The band’s debut disc, Caught in a Life, is out Sept 7… in Norway. D’oh.

This Is Why I Love Lily Allen

    2009 - 07.21

    Lily Allen '22'

Pop songs about heartbreak or dancing are a dime a dozen. More inventive artists tend to branch out in unlikely directions, which is why I must applaud one sprightly British songstress in particular.

While Lily Allen might sometimes write about romantic relationships, she truly stands out because she also explores other themes. Following up “Not Fair,” in which she complains about her lover’s ambivalence about getting her off, she sings about the hopelessness and desperation of an aging beauty in new single “22.” The lyrics, while depressing, are fantastic:

Cos all she wants is a boyfriend / She gets one night stands / She’s thinking how did I get here / I’m doing all that I can … Until the man of her dreams / Comes along, picks her up and puts her over his shoulder / It seems so unlikely in this day and age

The clever video only enhances the message. A disheveled-looking Lily peers at herself in the mirror, surrounded by dozens of dressed-up divas, only to be greeted by an alternate version of herself — extremely put-together and well-behaved. It’s a brilliant juxtaposition and quite a powerful statement. Enjoy!

Glitter Alert: Mika Returns With Sparkly New Single

    2009 - 07.20

    Mika

Love him or hate him, British pop sensation Mika definitely has his own thing going. But it’s been more than 2 years since his bubbly debut, and the ambiguously gay singer-songwriter is back with a grandiose new single.

“We Are Golden,” the title track from his forthcoming sophomore effort, is even more camp than most of his previous hits. The track employs similar Queen-inspired sensibilities, only this time it leans even more towards rock-opera meets Broadway musical. Check it out:

Honestly, I can’t decide how much I like it. It’s almost too much. And now that Mika has out-and-proud American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert invading his musical territory — though admittedly Lambert amps up the glam rock quite a bit more — it will be interesting to see if he can hold his own among gay fans. Time will tell…

The disc drops Sept 22, but in the meantime you can find a free download of the Don Diablo remix over at arjanwrites.com!

    Preston Thrills with ‘Kill’

    2009 - 07.08

    Preston

If you’re outside Britain, chances are you’ve never heard of Samuel Preston. Before fading into obscurity a few years ago, he was famous at home for appearing on Big Brother U.K., his brief marriage to Big Brother winner Chantelle, and fronting pop-rock outfit Ordinary Boys. Now simply known as Preston, he’s back with an updated look complete with tats and an expensive haircut as well as a synth-pop solo music career.

Lead single “Dressed to Kill” sounds quintessentially ’80s, with hints of Duran Duran, Adam & the Ants and Erasure. In other words, it’s brilliant. The video follows suit, with a major nod to cult fave The Lost Boys — complete with vampire fangs!! — as well as every old school clip set in the desert. It’s not high art, by any means, but it’s miles beyond the pop drivel he was producing before. Well done, I say. A welcome return. And did I mention that he’s gorgeous??
