Annie to Release Oft-Delayed Sophomore LP

    2009 - 08.25

    Annie

It’s about time! Norwegian indie-pop artist Annie finally has a solid release date for Don’t Stop — Oct 19 in Britain and Nov 17 in the States. Originally intended to drop more than 2 years ago, the disc will not include minor club hit/Stacey Q cover “Two of Hearts” or under-performing U.K. singles “I Know UR Girlfriend Hates Me” or “Anthonio” (featured on ¡viva la graham! in May). Strange if you ask me, especially considering the latter’s obvious sexy synth-appeal, but perhaps her record company knows what they are doing (HA!)…

Instead, the album is previewed by “Songs Remind Me of You,” an upbeat Richard X-produced track from 2006 (!) that would have fit right in on the singer’s debut. Perhaps that’s the point, given the high praise heaped on Anniemal… Have a listen:

    Monday Morning Motivation: La Roux

    2009 - 08.24

    La Roux

After raving about La Roux’s “Bulletproof” a few weeks ago — and subsequently semi-dissing previous single “In for the Kill” — a friend of mine turned me on to some wicked remixes of the latter. And I have since fallen in love with the track.

If you need convincing, give a listen to Skream’s mix of the electro-pop duo’s breakthrough single. It starts out slow but kicks into drum ‘n bass high gear at the end. It will definitely put you in a predatory mood this sluggish Monday morning.

Notes on the New Madonna Single

    2009 - 08.23

It’s full steam ahead for the Madonna train with new single “Celebration,” a mindless party track that sees the pop icon back in a flirty dance-floor mood following her split with Guy Ritchie. There’s nothing revolutionary to report here — the track will satisfy fans but probably won’t win over any new ones. It’s not entirely memorable but it’s definitely club-friendly. Overall, I’m underwhelmed. Come on, Madge, you can do better than this!

On a side note, I do enjoy when she says, “I guess I just don’t recognize you with your clothes on.” I might steal that, actually. But isn’t the planet’s most famous cougar a little old to be spouting off such amusingly saucy come-ons?

I also have mixed emotions about this cover art (below). It’s a composite of various classic photographs of Madonna and I’m not sure if the designer pulled it off or not. Thoughts??

    Monday Morning Motivation: Metric

    2009 - 08.17

It’s been a few weeks since the last Monday morning post — my sincerest apologies — so let’s kick this week off right with a standout track from Metric’s stellar disc, Fantasies. The straightforward, sparkler-infused video for “Sick Muse” will definitely offer a glorious distraction as you get ready to face the week, but not just because of the visuals. The track is just as enchanting.

My favorite aspect of the single may be the initial feeling of hesitation. Singer Emily Haines’ faux-contempt for Cupid is quickly revealed to be a front when she tackles the ethereal, optimistic chorus : “Everybody everybody just wanna fall in love / Everybody everybody just wanna play the lead.” I couldn’t agree more.

The ‘Time’ Has Come for Frankmusik

    2009 - 08.15

    Frankmusik

Electro-pop artist Frankmusik scored two moderate U.K. hits earlier this year with “Better Off as Two” and “Confusion Girl,” and he looks set to continue that success with his next single, “Time Will Tell.” The dance track expertly fuses an unmistakable early ’90s beat with a futuristic synth sound. Factor in a simple, memorable hook — “I lost my girl and I lost my world” — and the results are sexy and sublime.

“Time Will Tell” will be huge in the clubs, no doubt, but it’s a strong enough single that it could well finally make Mr. Vincent Turner a household name as well. Though it is only Frankmusik’s third single to chart, it is the fifth appearing on debut album Complete Me, which speaks volumes about the talent he possesses. After this I say they re-release “3 Little Words” — it’s a shame that one wasn’t a smash as well!

The Raveonettes to the Rescue with ‘Suicide’

    2009 - 08.12

    Raveonettes

Danish indie act The Raveonettes are back with what may be the duo’s best single yet, a bombastic and wholly irresistible track called “Suicide.” Building on the band’s trademark retro harmonies and surf-rock guitars, the song slays with a killer melody and a crazy-infectious chorus. Check it out:

If “Suicide” is any indication, I’m guessing I’ll fall in love with their forthcoming 4th effort, In and Out of Control, due for release in early October. Shortly thereafter, the pretty pair will embark on a lengthy U.S. tour, which is pretty sweet news as well! I’ve seen them live before — they put on an unforgettable show — you won’t want to miss it.
