Monday Motivation: Europop Duo Mini Viva Wins My Heart

    2009 - 11.30

… but not with that silly song they sang about leaving their hearts in Tokyo. That track didn’t really do it for me.

Thankfully second single “I Wish” is a keeper, and I present to you the disco-trance-lite Cahill remix. Disclaimer: if you’ve never enjoyed a Spice Girls single or have no affinity for Annie this will likely do nothing for you.

For those of you unfamiliar — which amounts to roughly 99% percent of those outside the British Isles — Mini Viva is the brainchild of U.K. production team Xenomania, whom is responsible for a handful of top dance-pop records from the past decade. Sugababes’ “Round Round” and Girls Aloud’s “Call the Shots” are two that immediately come to mind, so you know they cater to the smart girl group crowd.

Hopefully Mini Viva’s debut LP, which is being produced in full by Xenomania, will be less hit-or-miss for me… but as of now a release date hasn’t been set. “I Wish,” however, comes out today digitally in the U.K. with a CD single out next week.

NYC Indie Band Will Get You High

    2009 - 11.28

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

New York indie-pop act The Pains of Being Pure at Heart might have a silly hipster moniker — and the band’s image certainly screams Brooklyn chic — but don’t hold it against them. They’re actually quite good and probably (hopefully) not pretentious in the least.

Fans of The Cure (vintage) and The Smiths (on a happy day) will love latest single “Higher Than the Stars,” the title track from the group’s stellar new EP. (Side note: listening to the track made me want to bust out my old Wannadies CDs!) Surely the buzz building around the quartet is foreshadowing big things on the horizon. Check ‘em out:

    Hotties Haunt New Sounds Video

    2009 - 11.25

It’s been months since The Sounds first teased us with the trailer for the big-budget video for “Beatbox,” a standout track from the Swedish indie band’s latest disc, Crossing the Rubicon. Well, the new clip has finally been unveiled!

The horror-inspired mini-film finds vocalist Maja Ivarsson running from a handsome tribe of persistent predators and performing under a moonlit sea with her sexy bandmates. (Of special note: Felix is shirtless.) It was definitely worth the wait, and hopefully it will help the single become the big hit that it should be. Pass it along!

    Monday Motivation: Girls Loves ‘Laura’

    2009 - 11.23

I discovered hipster fave Girls just a few weeks ago, and I couldn’t wait any longer to share the lo-fi band’s latest video, “Laura.” It’s a bohemian beach bum’s wet dream!

Lyrically, the song acts as a troubled love letter to the track’s namesake, but the psychedelic, surf-pop infused guitars and melodies help lend the new single an air of hope and optimism. Front man Chris Owens’ heartfelt delivery only enhances its appeal.

The group’s debut disc, Album — out now on Matador records — is definitely on my holiday wish list.

    Saturday Spin: Madonna

    2009 - 11.21

    Madonna

Everyone knows I’m more of a Kylie slut than a Madonna whore. Not that I don’t love Her Madgesty — she is a living legend — I’m just not always impressed when she puts out sub-par material.

While recent single “Celebration” was adequate yet ultimately unmemorable, the second release from her new singles collection is definitely a thriller. Check out the sexy-scandalous David Guetta remix of “Revolver,” sans the annoying Lil Wayne bit, while you smear on some guyliner tonight. It’ll put you in the mood for something dangerous, I promise.

    Sia Debuts Delicious New Track

    2009 - 11.20

    Sia

Australian indie-pop sired Sia has offered a preview of her new record via Twitter. The new song is a re-working of “You’ve Changed,” a Lauren Flax collaboration on which she recently put a fresh discotastic spin.

The track will appear on her forthcoming 5th studio album, We Are Born, set for release early next year. The talented singer has been hard at work on Christina Aguilera’s next record as well, so it will interesting to see just how both projects turn out. I’m loving this fun new direction!
