    Top 40 Singles of 2009

    2009 - 12.30

It’s time for my annual list of my favorite music from the past year. All of the following were singles released in the calendar year 2009 — not necessarily in the U.S., either. I’ve picked my top 10 and included a brief explanation of each, with the remainder of the top tracks listed randomly thereafter.

    1. Dragonette “Pick Up the Phone” – With a simple chorus and irresistible retro-synth grooves, I’m surprised that this amazing rock track didn’t blow up this year. Perhaps the most underrated band on the planet. Wake up, America!
    2. Hurts “Wonderful Life” – The up-and-coming electro-pop act is still under the radar, but the word is spreading fast about U.K. duo Hurts. This moody mid-tempo track succeeds thanks to ultra-new wave beats and a haunting vocal that would make Depeche Mode jealous.
    3. Frankmusik “Better Off As Two” – It was tough for me to pick my top Frankmusik single from this year — they were all brilliant in their own way. The hyper, huge chorus helped me select “Better Off As Two,” a sickly-sweet ode to a rocky romance.
    4. Ra Ra Riot “Can You Tell” – Pining for that special someone, perhaps someone out of reach, is the subject of this superb single from the New York-based indie band. The gorgeous strings only enhance the familiar feeling of longing conveyed by the heart-breaking lyrics.
    5. Royksopp ft. Robyn “The Girl and the Robot” – Robyn may be taking her sweet time with her next record, but thankfully she lent her emotive pipes to this electronic gem. The robot voice certainly added a futuristic flair to Royksopp’s dramatic duet.
    6. White Lies “To Lose My Life” – I’m a sucker for goth-friendly indie rock, and White Lies certainly delivered with this death-obsessed love letter, hands down the best track from the band’s debut U.K. No. 1 disc.
    7. Lily Allen “22″ – Leave it to Ms. Allen to bring a dancehall-flavored song to my list. The divisive single received mixed reviews thanks to its subject matter — a woman approaching 30 experiencing a quarter-life crisis — but it definitely strikes a nerve in her clever-Lily way.
    8. Girls “Lust for Life” – I love the queer-friendly lyrics in this amazing single from the San Francisco-based indie-folk act. Wanting a pizza and a bottle of wine and musing about being fucked in the head — that’s right up my alley!
    9. Yeah Yeah Yeahs “Heads Will Roll” – Sometimes Karen O and company are a little out there, but they reeled in the crazy on this dance-floor filler with a macabre twist. Notable also for several killer remixes and a fantastic video.
    10. Britney Spears “If U Seek Amy” – Only Britney could sneak the F-word onto mainstream radio, which is why I had to include this fab song in the top 10. The killer hook certainly helped the sexy dance-pop track succeed in clubs and in the bedroom. Dirty girl.

Perfect! Sia Scores in New Video

    2009 - 12.22

I wrote about Sia’s “You’ve Changed” about a month ago, and now a playfully charming video has emerged. The hysterical clip plays off Guitar Hero-type games with a healthy dose of the singer’s twisted-kitschy style and sense of humor. What a wonderful holiday gift from the endearingly offbeat Australian!

    Rihanna Tries ‘Hard’

    2009 - 12.21

Check out the expensive video for the new Rihanna single, “Hard.” On the plus side, the war-themed clip is artfully directed, and the red-hot singer looks flawless as usual (I especially enjoy the black dress with the spiky shoulders!).

Unfortunately the ultra-bland track, an attempt to establish empowerment after trauma, cannot be saved by impressive visuals, which is disappointing after such a powerful lead single by the Barbados beauty. Hopefully in the near future we will be exposed to better songs on her new disc, Rated R. C’mon, RiRi, you can do better!!

Colbert Puts Yuppie Spin On Alice Keys’ ‘Empire’

    2009 - 12.17

Alicia Keys stopped by The Colbert Report Tuesday to promote her new record with a sit down-interview. But the highlight was when she performed a new version of “Empire State of Mind (Part II)” featuring the funnyman in full-on Jay-Z mode, hoodie and all!

Stephen Colbert emerges at about the 1:45 mark, where he raps about moving to Connecticut — “clean suburban air much better for my asthma” — and returning to the city as an upper-middle class tourist. Keys seems to genuinely get a kick out of it, and I think you will too.

Pop Act Like Candy Red Brings Motown to Nashville

    2009 - 12.15

    Like Candy Red

Meet Like Candy Red, a Motown-flavored pop act straight out of Music City. The exciting emerging band opened for soul songstress Denitia Odigie last week and I was immediately smitten by their unique brand of smart retro-soul with a modern indie twist.

The 3 sassy sisters who front the group — Hailey, Bree and Lyndee — have been performing together for years with their father’s band, Sonny Joe Blues Band, and later as Collier, the girls’ surname. They remind me of irresistible U.K. outfit The Pipettes, not just for their charming, ’60s girl-group-inspired choreography but also a penchant for gorgeous harmonies and undeniable hooks.

If you’re in Nashville you have 2 chances to sample Like Candy Red live this week. The ladies will perform an intimate set at The Basement tomorrow for ASCAP’s New Faces Night (Dec 16) and they will be joined by the full band Dec 17 at The Rutledge. You don’t want to miss them in action; Like Candy Red is definitely a sweet treat.

Boring! No Hot Man-on-Man Action for Lambert’s ‘Entertainment’ Clip

    2009 - 12.15

After Adam Lambert’s “racy” performance on the American Music Awards a few weeks ago I had high hopes for a scandalous promotional clip for official lead single “For Your Entertainment.”

Unfortunately there’s nothing too outrageous going on here, but there’s still an undercurrent of fluid sexuality which is rare for a mainstream male pop artist. So kudos to Lambert for being himself in that respect; I hope he continues to push the envelope.

Not sure if the track is going to catch on — it seems the controversy hasn’t translated to success on the charts thus far — but apparently “Whataya Want From Me” is already on deck as the next single from his debut disc. Watch his performance of the song on Ellen here!
