Notes on the ‘Idol’ Top 24

    2010 - 02.17

I hadn’t commented on season 9 of American Idol just yet, but the top 24 were revealed tonight and thankfully my favorite eye candy made the cut. I’ll be rooting for Tyler Grady (pictured above), the wiry Zeppelin-loving crooner with the tight jeans and ’70s style. He had me at hello — when he sang “Let’s Get It On” during his initial audition. Yes, please.

My knee-jerk reactions to a few of the other hopefuls:

    • Siobhan Magnus — She’s got great pipes, but why does she dress like Seinfeld’s Elaine circa 1996? Someone sick the staff stylist on her STAT!
    • Casey James — Famous for stripping off his shirt during his first audition, this soulful blue-eyed charmer could go far in the competition if Kara has her way. I’m usually a fan of long hair, but this one needs a haircut.
    • Crystal Bowersox — This season’s hippie girl! I love that she’s not a perfect 10, and she doesn’t fit in by far. I have a feeling Ellen had something to do with her making it this far.
    • Aaron Kelly — In a year that is glaringly devoid of flamboyant Glamberts, the awkwardly adorable 16-year-old definitely takes the crown for Most Likely to Like Boys (though Todrick Hall is a close second).
    • Ashley Rodriguez — Not sure what it is about this girl, but I have a major feeling that she’s the one to beat. But does gorgeous and stylish plus super-talented equal votes?  So long as she doesn’t fuck it up on disco week.

Head here for a complete list of the Top 24! The show returns Tuesday with the girls performing live while the guys take the stage the following evening. Stay tuned.

Fantasia Ditches Hood Boy, Returns to R&B

    2010 - 02.04

I’m not gonna lie. I rooted for Fantasia Barrino on American Idol, and I even cranked that ridiculous “Hood Boy” song in my car back in 2006 (can’t say the same for “Baby Mama,” though!). There’s no denying the woman can wail!

But somewhere along the line the talented vocalist lost control of her career. Did it have something to do with rapper ex-boyfriend Young Dro? Who knows. But after facing financial troubles, she realized she had to get her life back together. And so far things are looking up in 2010.

Fantasia version 2.0 appeared on Oprah yesterday (watch below) to sing comeback single “Even Angels,” a self-empowering ballad about moving on. She’s lost some weight, toned down her look and looks genuinely happy to be back. The slick R&B track ain’t half-bad either. Good for you, girl! Take a cue from Whitney and stay away from those hood boys from here on out.

    Premiere: New Adam Lambert Video

    2010 - 01.14

The brand-spankin’ new video for Adam Lambert’s “Whataya Want From Me” leaked ahead of schedule and it’s a relatively low-key production. The flamboyant singer tones down the guyliner in the clip, revealing a vulnerable side of his personality rarely seen behind his usual mask of makeup.

As far as the track itself is concerned, it’s arguably Glambert’s strongest single to date thanks to a massive chorus and a killer guitar riff. If mainstream audiences are willing to look past his sexuality (the jury is still out on that one), it could be a smash in multiple formats.

[Thanks to Arjanwrites for the heads up!]

Boring! No Hot Man-on-Man Action for Lambert’s ‘Entertainment’ Clip

    2009 - 12.15

After Adam Lambert’s “racy” performance on the American Music Awards a few weeks ago I had high hopes for a scandalous promotional clip for official lead single “For Your Entertainment.”

Unfortunately there’s nothing too outrageous going on here, but there’s still an undercurrent of fluid sexuality which is rare for a mainstream male pop artist. So kudos to Lambert for being himself in that respect; I hope he continues to push the envelope.

Not sure if the track is going to catch on — it seems the controversy hasn’t translated to success on the charts thus far — but apparently “Whataya Want From Me” is already on deck as the next single from his debut disc. Watch his performance of the song on Ellen here!

    Adam Lambert

Glamberts rejoice! The new Adam Lambert single has leaked a week ahead of its official U.S. release thanks to an Italian iTunes snafu. Taken from the soundtrack to Roland Emmerich’s newest disaster flick, 2012, “Time for Miracles” is grandiose and theatrical, just like the American Idol runner-up’s larger-than-life persona.

The sweeping power ballad truly succeeds because it manages to highlight the best aspects of Lambert’s impressive vocal range. There were times when I was irritated by the glam-rock singer’s screeching and screaming during his run on the Fox reality show, but he plays it relatively safe here and the track benefits from that subtle restraint. Let’s hope he continues in this direction without sacrificing the chutzpah that made him so appealing in the first place. Listen to “Time for Miracles” here:

‘American Idol’ Has Always Been Gay

    2009 - 03.15

    Adam Lambert

But there has never been an openly gay contestant on the show during the competition. Will current contestant Adam Lambert tear down that barrier? And if he did, would it hurt his chances of winning?

    Make out club

At the moment, he’s definitely a front runner (even if, in my opinion, his performance of Michael Jackson’s “Black or White” was painfully over-the-top). As of now, he hasn’t commented on the numerous photos of him queering it up (right, plus several more here ), and neither have American Idol’s producers.

But best of luck to him. Honestly, I’d be happy to see him forge a career out of this, and he’s definitely less annoying than Gayken. At least he seems to know what works for him, and I doubt he’d try to keep it in the closet. Fingers crossed he does it on a national stage.
