    The Big Pink Covers Beyonce

    2009 - 12.03

    The Big Pink

Give a listen to The Big Pink’s haunting, beautiful cover of Beyonce’s ubiquitous “Sweet Dreams” on Radio 1’s Live Lounge. The London-based electro-rockers haven’t really been on my radar lately — recent single “Domino” was alright but not as good as those that came before it — but their simple take on Ms. Knowles’ larger-than-life R&B hit is very impressive.

The Big Pink – Sweet Dreams (Beyonce Cover)

In my opinion their best work to date has been second single “Velvet,” from debut disc A Brief History of Love, the video for which I’ve posted below. I’m a sucker for a big wall of guitars and industrial beats.

Side note: I approve of front man Robbie Furze’s gratuitous nudity in the photo up top. Just saying.

Sasha Fierce Is Dead to Me!

    2008 - 11.22

I’m not sure who came up with this Sasha Fierce character, but I’d like to give them a serious beat down. Beyonce can be irritating enough on her own (full disclosure: I’m still “Crazy In Love”), now she takes it a step further with this tart! I do applaud her for bringing the robotic glove to the mainstream (everyone needs one!), but otherwise Sasha Fierce is nothing but a useless but effective marketing ploy.

Of course, the gays have eaten this shit up. Case in point: a random mega-queen called Shane Mercado has become an internet celebrity thanks to his re-enactment of the dance in the video for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).” He performed on The Bonnie Hunt Show, plus he inspired a slew of hysterical copycats. Even SNL got in on the Sasha Fierce action with an actually-quite-funny parody of the clip with Justin Timberlake last weekend.

Ok, so Sasha Fierce has inadvertently provided us with a few laughs. But it’s also unwittingly given Beyonce loads of publicity, so we’ll most likely be stuck with that bitch for the unforeseeable future. The worst part of all? I’m starting to like that horrible fucking song!! Somebody put me out of my misery.

What Did She Do to Deserve This?

Of course you know Beyonce, pictured right, but do you recognize that poor girl on the left? It’s her little sister Solange Knowles.

If you think Solange’s disproportionate dress looks bad in this photo, you should have seen it on stage last night at the Grammy Awards. Beyonce (or more likely one of Beyonce’s stylists) probably told her she looked hot, so against her better judgment she went with it.

Solange cannot catch a break! Beyonce better not hog the spotlight for too long, or else in forty years there could be some serious drama a la What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? On second thought, keep up the good work Beyonce!

congratulations are in order for freemasons, a group of beat masters who manage to resuscitate an otherwise limp beyonce track called “green light.” i loved their last single, “rain down love,” but i really admire them for what they’ve done here. who else could have transformed a by-the-numbers album track into something truly dancefloor-worthy? not i, said the fly.

unfortunately, the visuals are unremarkable… primarily because it seems as if all involved felt like parodying robert palmer was an original idea.

    double trouble

    2007 - 03.28

one woman is known for being bootylicious, the other for having hips that don’t lie. it makes perfect sense to put these two body-conscious ladies together for a serious superstar duet.

the fun part of beyonce and shakira’s new video, “beautiful liar,” is trying to figure out who’s who! i never really thought they looked alike before, but thanks to similar outfits and hairstyles (and a bit of rain and smoke), it takes a moment to tell in almost every shot. i know not everyone out there is a fan of either of these divas, but whether or not you like the song i think the effect is mesmerizing.

nellyfurtado3.jpgcongratulations are in order for nelly furtado, who scored her second u.s. no. 1 single today with “say it right.” her rise to the peak of the billboard chart ends the seemingly eternal reign of beyonce, who remained on top with “irreplaceable” for basically as long as i can remember.

nelly better enjoy it while she can, cos she’s got some stiff competition hot on her heels. if things go according to plan, gwen will overtake her in the next week or two with “the sweet escape”… just don’t let fergie ferg get to no. 1!! it will only encourage her to punish us with another dreadful solo record.
