Lily Allen

looking fit

lilyallenrocks.jpg

what do we have here? i can hardly believe it, but it’s lily allen looking absolutely amazing. she ditched the empire waist for a figure-hugging number at a recent fashion rocks afterparty in london. it’s not that lily was a big girl before, but now she is in very good shape. watch out winehouse!

straight outta toontown

i’m obviously still catching up from my vacation, because here’s another one that’s been floating around for a bit. it’s lily allen singing vocals on a jazzy reimagining of kaiser chief’s “oh my god” cooked up by the delicious mark ronson.

ms. allen doesn’t appear in the video, unfortunately. instead it’s a sexed-up animated character designed (very roughly) in her image. it’s a cute clip (and not just cos of mark), but i wish they’d had lily in the flesh — even if in reality she isn’t such a flirty minx.

touché!

lilyallen4.jpg

lily allen has hit back at fellow brit lady sovereign after she basically said lily has only become so famous because of her father (it should be noted that keith allen is well-known in the u.k., but is hardly a household name around the globe).

wasting little time with her retort, lily replied, “in response to miss sovereign’s comments, i’ve spoken to my dad and he says he’d be happy to adopt you if you think it will give you a leg up.”

if you keep up with this blog, you know i’m a fan of lily’s music and her sharp tongue. i don’t always agree with what she has to say, but this time her sarcasm was right on the mark. i mean, how could you respond to that?? as for lady sovereign, who hardly has the talent to back up her big mouth, i think she’d be right at home on vh1’s white rapper show.

for the love of alfie

i know that every other site on the web has already posted the new lily allen video for “alfie,” but i how could i ignore it? any clip that features a pot-smoking puppet deserves the attention. it is, of course, the video of the week.

seriously, this is almost as fab as when kylie sang with kermit the frog. almost.

lily allen invades america

lilyallen3.jpgfinally!! the acid-tongued tart sets her sights on the u.s. starting today with the north american release of her debut, alright, still.

perhaps the most surprising news concerns her stateside tv debut. on the strength of her overseas success, she landed the plum job of musical guest on this week’s saturday night live (drew barrymore hosts). impressive. now when are we going to hear “smile” on the radio?

on top of this coup, lily has partnered with mtv for their much-publicized discover and download tour. unsurprisingly, the tour will avoid the south completely (though she will stop by austin’s sxsw festival in march), but the rest of you can catch her in these very cosmopolitan cities: los angeles, feb 5; san francisco, feb 6; chicago feb 8; new york, feb 10; philadelphia, feb 12; d.c., feb 16; and boston, feb 18.

back in the u.k., lily leads the pack with four brit award nominations. so far, she looks set to repeat some form of that success across the pond.

gay faves come out for ’sisters

lilyjake2.jpgthe scissor sisters final u.k. show turned out to be a gay old time… even more than usual!

saucy songstress lily allen, who definitely has her share of queer fans, lived it up with jake shears after the performance. several others were also in attendance, including sir ian mckellan and popstar sophie ellis bextor (below with babydaddy), the “murder on the dancefloor” diva - who we’re excited to hear is currently finishing up work on her next album.

new single “land of a thousand words” is out in the u.k. next week, which makes me wonder which track is next. my vote’s for “i can’t decide”!! can’t get enough of it.

attention trendsetters!

lilyallen2.jpgif you live in the u.s. and haven’t yet heard of lily allen, now is the time. the sprightly brit is poised to break big when her smash debut alright, still… comes out stateside in january, and you’ll want to be the first person to tell your friends how brilliant it is.

in britain, they are of course ahead of us lazy yanks. they’re already on her third single, and it’s a lush mid-tempo number called “littlest things.” the video is sort of a throwback to old hollywood black & white films. it’s very well done, and it’s a lovely compliment to a beautiful track. check it out, it’s the video of the week!

lily allen proves herself

lilyallen.jpgyou can’t always trust popjustice. most of the time, their recommendations are spot on, but every once in a while, they go a bit off the deep end… that’s why i didn’t take their word for it when they first said lily allen was the “next big thing.”

i was finally convinced to check out the up-and-comer when i heard (via dotmusic) that she had posted a blog ranting about some of her fellow british pop idols. both luke pritchard, frontman for the kooks, and dirty pretty things’ carl barat are hysterically labeled “twats,” and lily even goes so far to say that the latter has a god complex. ouch!

welcome to the world of indie rock snobs, honey. lily is still a young one, you see, with much to learn. anyway, on her blog, which i’m sure her record company will soon take control of, she goes on to count herself among her idiot peers after she loses her handbag and has a diva moment of her own. let’s hope she’s able to keep her head on her shoulders, because her debut single is actually quite promising…

speaking of which, check out “smile” (with windows media), in which she basically lives out the sweetest revenge fantasy i’ve seen in ages. keep it up, babe!
