    Monday Motivation: Elastica vs Moloko

    2010 - 03.08

After reminiscing about my grunge-fueled high school days last week, I was reminded of my other favorite genre from the ’90s — Britpop. And when I randomly heard an insane mashup featuring the killer “Connection” guitar riff from post-punk outfit Elastica, I knew I had to share it here.

The remix features the vocals of Roisin Murphy — back when she was still in Moloko — on a No. 1 club hit you might remember from 1999 called “Sing It Back.” I’m not sure where this remix came from, but it definitely provided me with an energetic, twisted trip down memory lane. Check it out:

    Monday Motivation: Alex Gardner

    2010 - 03.01

When I first heard about the buzz about electropop crooner Alex Gardner, I wasn’t sure he was getting attention for the right reasons. Let’s face it, the guy’s a hottie. And sometimes good looks can help mediocre talent score record deals.

Then I saw the video for the 18-year-old Scots’ lead single, a breezy up-tempo track called “I’m Not Mad.” Sure, Gardner might resemble a barely legal Czech porn star, but he actually has the vocal chops to back up the hype. Like a less raspy, club-friendly version of James Morrisson. It doesn’t hurt that the song was produced by Xenomania.

Gardner kicks off a U.K. tour in Glasgow March 11 ahead of the single’s March 22 release. The eye-candy clip below should perk you up this morning.

    Monday Motivation: Groove Armada

    2010 - 02.01

London-based electronic act Groove Armada has offered up 3 superb singles ahead of new disc Black Light’s Feb 23 release date. The dance duo has certainly come a long way since “I See You Baby,” the novelty record that helped put them on the map in ‘99. I’m definitely digging the more mature sound they’ve got going now.

Lead track “Warsaw” featured Nick Littlemore of Empire of the Sun and PNAU fame, but my favorite is “I Won’t Kneel,” featuring SaintSaviour. The Treasure Fingers Epicwave remix is especially fantastic — it’s got a bit of a Passion Pit vibe to it — and you can download it here! You’re welcome.

    Monday Motivation: Sneaky Sound System

    2010 - 01.25

Australia’s Sneaky Sound System made waves recently by joining forces with Tiesto for “I Will Be Here,” the lead single off his latest effort, Kaleidescope. Many of you might not be familiar with the group’s brand of club-friendly lounge pop, so I present to you a better known single from their first album.

“Pictures” is a leisurely dance track with a dash of funk and plenty of attitude. Originally released in Oz in 2006, it has slowly gained popularity across the globe. Perhaps you’ve heard it before… Listen below and download the dancefloor friendly Tonite Only remix:

Look out for the electronic act’s third LP later this year.

    Monday Motivation: Warpaint

    2010 - 01.18

L.A.-based alternative act Warpaint has won me over with the mesmerizing clip for “Elephants,” from the group’s latest EP, Exquisite Corpse. Musically, I’d call them a cross between Bjork and Hole with a healthy dose of ’90s shoegazing.

Famous fans include the late Heath Ledger and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ John Frusciante, who mixed their current release. (Fun fact: actress Shannyn Sossamon — best known for her dramatic turn in The Rules of Attraction — was the original drummer.) The ladies are currently in the studio recording their debut LP for Rough Trade records.

    Monday Motivation: Dangerous Muse

    2010 - 01.11

If anything can get you going on a sluggish, overcast Monday, surely it’s a shirtless Mikey Furey in bondage gear. I apologize for neglecting to post this video sooner, it must have gotten lost in the holiday madness.

“I Want It All” continues to impress me; I daresay it’s the band’s best single to date. Hopefully it gets the attention of a wider audience…
