Notes on the New Rihanna Video

    2010 - 02.11

Here is the clip for “Rude Boy,” the new Rihanna single which I remarked on gleefully just weeks ago. My thoughts upon seeing the final product:

    1. It is much more colorful and playful than her recent videos — though the director is careful to remind viewers about the singer’s new rough-and-tumble attitude. Note the close-up of the clenched teeth.

    2. For the most part, the visuals do not match up with the dirty words coming out of that vixen mouth. Though my favorite part might be when she takes a peek inside an attractive gent’s trousers, perhaps in order to answer the question, “Is you big enough?”

    3. She does, however, do all sorts of “rude” things with wild animals (dead and stuffed, I assume), such as simulated anal sex with a lion! Normally I don’t subscribe to such unspeakable fetishes, but somehow in this context it comes off as amusing and not sexually disturbed. Fascinating.

    4. This very sexy yet approachable clip will only increase the song’s chances at prolonged chart domination. Mark my words.

Revved-Up Rihanna Gets ‘Rude,’ Gets Her Mojo Back

    2010 - 01.29

Although Rihanna emerged empowered after personal turmoil in 2009, she hasn’t quite ruled the airwaves the way she did the year before. Certainly her latest disc, Rated R, has been a success — it debuted at No. 1 and has already spawned 2 top 10 hits — but “Russian Roulette” and “Hard” haven’t really been as ubiquitous as “Umbrella” or “Please Don’t Stop the Music.”

This will change with the release of new single “Rude Boy,” in which the suddenly-edgy hip-pop star unleashes her inner sex kitten. Case in point: the cover art you see above. But get a load of the song’s steamy lyrics:

“I like the way you touch me there / I like the way you pull my hair / Baby, if I don’t feel it I ain’t faking, no no / I like when you tell me kiss it here / I like when you tell me move it there / So giddy up, time to get it up”

And that’s just the bridge! Beyond the stimulating content, the track boasts a sick beat and seriously sexy synths… so without further foreplay, here’s the raunch-fest in its entirety. Hope you love it as much as I do. And if not, get over it, because this one is going to be HUGE. Pun intended.

    Rihanna Tries ‘Hard’

    2009 - 12.21

Check out the expensive video for the new Rihanna single, “Hard.” On the plus side, the war-themed clip is artfully directed, and the red-hot singer looks flawless as usual (I especially enjoy the black dress with the spiky shoulders!).

Unfortunately the ultra-bland track, an attempt to establish empowerment after trauma, cannot be saved by impressive visuals, which is disappointing after such a powerful lead single by the Barbados beauty. Hopefully in the near future we will be exposed to better songs on her new disc, Rated R. C’mon, RiRi, you can do better!!

Rihanna Returns with Chilling New Single

    2009 - 10.20

    Rihanna

It’s been nearly 2 1/2 years since Rihanna launched a proper new album, when “Umbrella” kicked off the mega-popular Good Girl Gone Bad era in June of 2007. That record launched 8 global smash hits before the singer went on hiatus following an assault by then-boyfriend Chris Brown this past February. Eight months later, the Barbados beauty is finally ready to return to the spotlight.

Instead of bouncing back with an edgy, flashy club number, the R&B diva’s haunting new single, “Russian Roulette,” is more of a slow burner. Likely drawing on events from Rihanna’s personal life, the single, which she co-wrote with Ne-Yo, explores a darker side of her psyche. “So just pull the trigger,” she sings, and the track ends with a bang. The new LP, Rated R, drops Nov 23.

    New Rihanna Video!

    2008 - 07.26

“Disturbia” has arrived and it is probably one of the most visually stunning videos Rihanna has released (and lately she’s done several goodies). This time around, she flirts with freaks, beasts and creepy crawlies — all the while looking like the hottest horror movie vixen to ever exist (no easy feat!)!

The dark concept might not be anything new (I was reminded of old Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails videos), but it’s certainly been a long time since such a mainstream artist had the nerve to go with such a macabre clip — so kudos to Rihanna and especially the director. “Disturbia” is going to make headlines.

    britney caught without umbrella

    2007 - 08.29

britneypout.jpghere’s an interesting tidbit. rihanna’s “umbrella” could have taken a very different form if it had been recorded by the artist who initially expressed interest — britney spears. (can you imagine her doing the “ella ella” part?? oh dear!).

whether you love or hate rihanna’s take, it’s difficult to deny that it’s a fairly effective pop song. and ms. spears has done well with undeniably catchy singles like “toxic” and “baby one more time” — songs that honestly even could have been hits had they been recorded by a cheeky sea lion. if she had snagged “umbrella,” it could have relaunched her career. d’oh.

i suppose it’s safe to say britney’s a bit jealous. i know i would be! we shall see if her confirmed comeback single “gimme more” is the next “umbrella.” i’m actually rooting for her, but it looks like the cards are stacked against her.
