looking good, sounding blah

the new spice girls single, “headlines (friendship never ends),” isn’t that great. it’s like “2 become 1″ only half as good.

but here’s the video anyway. everyone looks great, especially geri. i hope things go well for them so they can release something a bit more upbeat to make up for this by-the-numbers ballad.

what about geri?

the spice girls are reuniting, but what are they going to do when it’s time to sing “holler” on their world tour? ginger left the group before the other girls recorded the song, so she doesn’t even have a fraction of a verse to contribute. perhaps she’ll lip-sync to victoria’s part. we shall see.

here’s the futuristic video for that better-than-average single. if you’re in the u.s., you might not remember this because by this point america was over it. regardless, it’s better than “spice up your life” by a mile.

better together

spicegirls2007.jpg

the spice girls have finally realized that their respective (mostly unsuccessful) solo careers will never spark as much interest as a collaborative effort. they held a press conference earlier today to announce their world tour this winter, and the appearance marked the first time all five were seen together since geri halliwell abruptly left the group in 1998.

there’s no word yet whether or not the girls will be recording any new material, though really they’d be stupid not to. obviously their reunion involves a healthy payday or they wouldn’t have bothered, so why not cash in? a triumphant return to the top of the charts would really only sweeten the deal… and if they can come up with anything half as decent as “say you’ll be there,” i’m all about it.

standing in the way of control

melaniec.jpg

i’m not sure how recent this photo of melanie chisholm was taken, but she’s looking pretty good here. now if only she were right in the head…

former manager simon fuller claims she’s the only spice girl hesitant about a proposed reunion. on one hand, i can understand her position. they split up forever ago! let her do her solo thing.

but then i heard found out what she was doing next. turns out melanie c recorded a pointless cover of bow wow wow’s ’80s smash “i want candy,” which will serve as her new u.k. single (watch a recent performance here). she’s picked a downer as the lead track in other regions of europe, a mostly-boring ballad called “the moment you believe” (watch).

ugh! i hate to agree with fuller, but if this is the best mel c can do, she needs to pack it in. you can’t fight fate, my dear. give the people what they want!

analyze this

spicegirls.jpg

while perusing popjustice a few nights ago, i happened upon an article about the spice girls burying the hatchet and reforming for charity. now we’ve all been teased and tortured with this gossip before, so i’m not going to put money on it actually happening. but this time, after reading about them, the girls invaded my dreams…

it was sunset at starwood ampitheatre, where i saw the spice girls (minus geri) perform back in 1998. the venue was packed with cheering fans. the stage was empty and a pair of limousines began driving down the paved path separating the covered seating area and the general admission grass section.

suddenly, the sunroof of each limo opened and up came all five girls (though i can’t recall which girls were grouped together, i’d like to think geri and mel b were clasping hands). the crowd erupted, the girls smiled and waved. they really were back!! unfortunately, they never took the stage. the limos continued back and forth down the path, and very quickly the mood changed from “hurrah!” to “let’s get on with it!” and that was that.

interpret that as you will. i’m not sure what exactly the dream was predicting. i’m just sad they didn’t sing “say you’ll be there.”

snap out of it!

emmabunton.jpg

i’ve got a soft spot for emma bunton, i really do, but this time i think she’s finally lost the plot.

i should have seen this coming, really. covering “downtown,” though it was fun and slightly cheeky, wasn’t exactly a brilliant idea. making matters worse, emma’s new single, “all i need to know,” is a total snoozer. seriously, i couldn’t even make it past the second verse! what happened, dear?

perhaps now that emma’s got a baby on the way, she’ll give up on this popstar business for a while — at least until she can come up with something a little more lively.

on the catwalk

vickibecks.jpgformer posh spice victoria (aka mrs. david beckham) attended tomkat’s wedding this past weekend and - shock horror! - the bitch took advantage of the opportunity.

instead of taking her seat like a lady, victoria instead pretended like she was on the runway at fashion week. the dress isn’t hideous - well, other than that leather bow. but perhaps the most unforgivable aspect of her outfit is that outrageous hat. what is with those brits? is there some law requiring silly hats on special occasions?

emma bunton s.o.s.

emmadancing.jpgoutside the u.k., most people don’t know that “baby spice” emma bunton forged a career after the spices scattered (bless ‘em!). she actually had a string of modest hits, several of which were quite listenable.

her latest career move, however, astounds me. you see, miss bunton has been starring on a reality-television series called strictly come dancing (promo shot pictured), which is incidentally the origin of the u.s. version, dancing with the stars. i know they love high camp on the sceptred isle, but i really don’t see this as a way to rise above it all.

to top it off, emma’s new single is a cover of classic 60s anthem “downtown.” she predictably hasn’t improved upon the original, but apparently the proceeds are going to charity… so at least there’s something positive going on there.

at least she’s got a recurring role on ab fab, which almost makes it all better. regardless, i hope she doesn’t continue down this path. i don’t want to put her on notice.

remember all saints?

allsaints.jpg

they came out about the same time as the spice girls, and they had a hit with a song called “never ever.” i know, i can barely recall as well. i was preoccupied with “2 become 1.”

anyway, they’re trying to make a big comeback at the moment over in the u.k., and their new single is actually quite good. it’s called “rock steady” and i like it even if the name was stolen from a no doubt record.

soooo, if you’re feeling nostalgic, give it a listen. besides being fab, it also makes me wish geri halliwell would sort things out with mel b. c’mon!

victoria’s style commandments

victoriabeckham.jpgin an unprecedented act of good will, former posh spice victoria beckham has decided to bestow upon the world her ten commandments of style.

her advice for aspiring fashionistas does contain nuggets of truth. victoria recommends investing in timeless classics, and she also discourages dressing like a total whore, as it is “much sexier to leave a little to the imagination.”

the cluelessless of mrs. beckham shines through when she sings the praises of shopping around the world - especially japan and new york… because of course we all have the time and money to charter a private jet and spend a week shopping in tokyo!
