Sugababes Carry On with Sweet ‘Kiss’

    2010 - 01.09

    **UPDATED video Jan 20.**

The new Sugababes video for “Wear My Kiss” premiered today (watch it above) and I must say that I’m enjoying the direction forthcoming disc Sweet 7 is taking. The electro-pop track is seriously spectacular, and despite a few questionable special effects decisions, the clip looks cracking!

Looking back at the group’s discography, it’s not often that I’m this psyched about single no. 3. Of course this is a new era for the ‘babes with Jade Ewan on board and all, etc.

At the same time, it must be terrifying for the trio to always be mindful that one false move could warrant a pink slip from the powers that be. At difficult moments they must be thinking, Don’t rock the boat, darling, you don’t want to end up like Siobhan, now do ya?

If you need additional proof that these ladies are but mere puppets, look no further. Here they are hawking Microsoft Windows 7, bless ‘em.

“Wear My Kiss” is due out Feb 22, just in time for Cupid’s claim to fame. The effectiveness of such calculated timing remains to be seen.

    Sugababes Clip Falls Short

    2009 - 10.20

It’s business as usual in Camp Sugababes. The girl group continues to behave as if nothing ever happened — the usual plan of action — after dumping founding member Keisha Buchanan just a few weeks ago. With little fanfare the ‘babes have unveiled the Kill Bill-inspired clip for “About A Girl,” a moderately engaging club track that will undoubtedly grow on me in the months to come. It doesn’t have the wow-factor that gave previous single “Get Sexy” such immediate attention, and with the line-up change it remains to be seen how well it will be received.

The video, on the other hand, is another issue altogether (though in the director’s defense there were some significant last minute changes!). Early reports touted that the girls would be doing their own stunts, but instead three random leather-clad ladies take their place in the butt-kicking department. Major disappointment there. And if you’re going to take on a Tarantino theme, you need bad-ass villains, not the clowns who appear here. As far as cohesion is concerned, “About A Girl” is a bit of a misfire. Sorry Jade! It’ll get better.

At least they look gorgeous, right? And that’s really all that matters…

    Shock Horror: Keisha Leaves Sugababes

    2009 - 09.22

    Get Sexy

We should have seen this coming.

Here’s a screen shot from the latest Sugababes video, “Get Sexy.” I was watching it about a week ago and I actually thought to myself, Amelle Berrabah is front-and-center for most of the clip. Surely Keisha Buchannan, who was the girl groups’ only remaining founding member at the time of the singles’ U.K. release, is not pleased with this.

Call it ESP or at the very least an eerie premonition. But if you watch “Get Sexy” again you will see what I mean. Then when rumors swirled last week that Amelle was quitting, I thought, Oh shit! If that’s true, they’ll have to re-shoot the entire thing.

But those rumors weren’t completely accurate. According to the official press release, Amelle and Heidi Range will continue on as Sugababes with new member Jade Ewen (version 4.0 for those of you keeping score). Keisha will remain signed with Island Records as a solo artist. And so the dramatic saga continues…

    New Sugababes Video!

    2009 - 08.07

And here it is, the clip for hot new Sugababes single “Get Sexy.” The slick video is just as smokin’ as the song — you can tell that the record label is throwing some cash into promoting the group this time around. Stateside success is truly imminent.

Check out the artwork for the single below. I am getting excited about hearing the upcoming album!

    Sugababes’ Stunningly ‘Sexy’ Return

    2009 - 07.08

    Sugababes

British girl group Sugababes are primed for mega-success with their brand-spankin’ new single, “Get Sexy.” The song debuted on Britain’s Radio 1 yesterday, and my immediate reaction to the daring hip-pop/electro track is WOW. The ladies recently signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Records, a major coup. And if anything can finally make a name for them in America, “Get Sexy” is it. Have a listen to the radio rip:

At first I wasn’t so sure about the Right Said Fred-inspired chorus (!!!) — “And I’m so sexy in this club, so sexy in this club, so sexy it hurts.” If I had more time I’d photoshop bald heads on that American Apparel ad above! But on second thought, it totally works and in the end the club-ready production will surely transcend the reference. See you on this side of the Atlantic very soon, girls! I have a feeling that this is your time.

Sugababes Satisfy Fanbase in Latest Video

    2009 - 01.26

The last two posts were a little bit butch, so I thought it was a good time to balance that out with the latest Sugababes video! Enjoy the clip for “No Can Do,” an-actually-quite-good single that could have been recorded in the golden era of ’60s girl groups — though it somehow seems altogether modern at the same time.

The video features the trio vamping it up amongst a gaggle of mostly-naked men in several interesting positions (haha, it’s not at dirty as it sounds). Yes, the ‘babes definitely know how to please their fans. And of course that primarily consists of gay men and saucy straight women.

The clip opens with Amelle lying amongst several of the hunks, shot from above. I’m not complaining — I think it’s an entertaining video — but when I look at that first bit I can’t help but think Kylie did it better.

If the video above becomes unavailable, watch it here.
